Obrigado,

Steven

Who is Steven

One of the greatest challenges I’ve had to overcome was moving from Canada to Brazil.

Over the last year that I have been here has presented a number of obstacles. Adjusting to the weather and the language would be the top two on my list…Upon my arrival to Brazil, I didn’t know much more than oi e tchau. So, I have experienced how it feels to be disconnected within the world (Brazil) I am living. A strange feeling, but; one I believe has helped me to understand the position of many Brazilians (speaking Portuguese in an English dominant world). As an English teacher, here in Divinopolis, I have come to a few conclusions. Firstly, it is apparent to me the desire of many Brazilians to learn and the intelligence to do so. Second, the lack of opportunity in most circumstances to practice what has been learned. Lastly, for the average Brazilian the lack of current practical information in which to study. I have nothing but respect for the dedication of many people (particularly my students), who are working extremely hard to better their lives under these circumstances. With these points in mind, we arrive at the reason for this column. Due to the interest of Divinews to “add to” or “enhance” the community in which it serves, I have the distinct pleasure and unique opportunity to introduce and conduct the first interactive English column in Divinopolis.

Israel against the world!

It sounds a little drastic but, many are determined to see this
“evil nation” come to an end. Today many believe that if the existence of Israel ceased so would the existence of suicide bombers. Seems a backwards thinking to me! Allow the existence of mentally unstable people and do away with the Jewish state for the common good!

I am going to begin with an issue that has caught the eye of the world today, and it is the issue surrounding the Middle East namely Israel and their right to exist as a people and a nation.

You may find it surprising that the same radical groups that deny Israel’s “right to exist”, also makes the same claim to the United States as a nation. After all these two nations achieved independence in the same way…the construction of a new civilization in a largely desolate and under-populated land, with lengthy battles against a determined opposition. The main difference between the two situations is that the United States has had their independence for over 200 years and Israel a mere sixty.

Does the fact that Israel´s ancient claim to this disputed land have any bearing on their “right to exist”? In order to answer this question with a proper perspective, it is necessary to put to rest some thirty years of blatant anti-Israel propaganda. The united kingdom of Israel was a kingdom that existed in the land of Israel, in which historians date from 1020BC to 930BC, (there are slight differences as to the exact dates but it is a marginal issue).

King David established Jerusalem as Israel’s national capital 3000 years ago. Under David’s successor Solomon, Israel experienced a period of peace and prosperity and it was during this time that the “first” temple was built in Jerusalem. To this date, remnants of this same temple exist, “the western wall”.
From the time of the destruction of the ancient Jewish common wealth in 70 A.D., the land that consisted of the current state of Israel never had independent existence but, rather passed back and forth among the following world empires – Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Crusader, Mamaluke, Ottoman and British. Within the period of almost 2000 years never has the name “Palestine” as a nation appeared on any maps anywhere.

“The existence of a separate Palestinian identity serves only tactical purposes. The founding of a Palestinian state is a new tool in the continuing battle against Israel”.

Zuheir Mushin late military department head of the PLO and members of its Executive Council, Dutch Daily Trouw, March 1977. Therefore the claim from this “so called” Palestinian nation that Israel has supplanted or rather taken over their land is a bold faced lie. How can something that never existed be taken?

Since the birth of the nation of Israel, the Jewish connection to their homeland remained impassioned and unbroken regardless of occupation or enslavement.
On July 24 1922, the 52 governments of the “League of Nations”, formally recognized and endorsed the British Balfour declaration calling for “reconstituting…a national home for the Jewish people” in the land in which they enjoyed “historical connections”. A little over 2 decades later, the United Nations validated this and in 1949 Israel was recognized as a full member state.
With these facts in mind and many more that have not been mentioned, it cannot be disputed that this nation has existed and Jerusalem is the heart of Israel.
This leads me to ask a number of questions:

-Why is there such contention over the existence of Israel?
– Why is there such a hatred for these people?
-Why is it throughout history has the Jewish race been persecuted, enslaved and subject to destruction?
-How is it that such a small insignificant portion of land in relation to the size of this world, captivated the attention of all the current major governments?
There are many countries and organizations joining forces at this very moment to wage war against Israel. Iran, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, and Russia as a supplier of weaponry.

The Hezbollah and Hamas rearmed and ready for battle. The call to war from these Muslim dominant nations is not just a call to victory against Israel but, a call to complete extermination. As the president of Iran Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had been quoted saying, “the regime occupying Jerusalem must be removed from the pages of history”. Others have quoted him say, “wiping them off the face of the map”. However it is said or interpreted them message means the same thing.
Sounds a lot like Hitler doesn’t it? He tried this and was well on his way with the execution of 6 million Jews during the Second World War.
Does history not teach us anything? How is it that this is potentially being permitted to happen again?
With your interaction as readers, I would like to explore the questions I have posed and more. Bring to surface hard truths surrounding the intentions of the governments we are subject to today. I encourage you to write in (in English) and express your thoughts/opinions.
